In the foothills of Northern Nevada and nestled in the Humboldt mountains lies a charming little 5 acre farm. In 2023 Bekah Celeste found herself moving there for the summer to take a 4 month course called The Georgic Schoolroom. As she drove along the winding country road with her car packed for the adventure ahead, she drove slowly and admired all the red barns, cattle shoots, green fields, and herds of cows along the ranching road that would be her home for the next 4 months. She thought she had signed up for a gardening class to learn regenerative agriculture and how to work with the land to build soil and grow nutritious food. While all this was true, it was so much more than a gardening class. During the summer she gained self validation from eating out of her own garden for 3 weeks, found her voice as well as her creativity, and discovered a conviction to help the world be a better place by being herself.

When faced with the decision of what to grow in her garden during the second year of attending the program, she thought, “What if I don’t grow food at all? How nice would it be to have a flower garden and have them all be medicinal herbs?!” For many years she had studied and been interested in the medicinal qualities of plants and now had a place where she could actually grow them. She created 8 rows that were about 50 feet long, and with the help of Survival Garden Seeds, she planted chamomile, valerian, comfrey, calendula, yarrow, plantain, marigolds, and echinacea.

During the summer while her little herb garden was growing, she attended the second year at The Georgic Schoolroom. The curriculum was based on creating a business plan out of a need in society that the individual student can do something to help because of who they are and what they care about. Bekah Celeste leaned into her love of herbs. She had noticed that there are two demographics of people who often will resist herbal remedies because they taste nasty. Those two groups of people are children and husbands. Drawing on her years of study from people like Dr. Christopher, Rosemary Gladstar, and Dr. Patrick Jones, she combined her love and fascination for the healing qualities of plants with her sweet tooth, and created an Herbal Candy Class. Using the herbs in her regenerative garden that came from Survival Garden Seeds, she makes salves, tinctures, glycerides, and all kinds of candies like chocolates and gummy bears. She packs them up in her car and travels to peoples homes to teach groups of people the basic principles of how to use herbs so that they are effective in your body, how to use them for every day problems likes coughs, cuts, menstrual cramps, fevers, etc. and most importantly, how to make them into candy so even the most stubborn people in your family will love to take their herbal remedies!
Bekah Celeste is grateful to Survival Garden Seeds for their contribution of seeds that have turned into a beautiful medicinal herb garden and herbal candies that help people to feel happy while healing from the pains of this life.
